“I need to get to Yew, but I don’t know how.”
Here you’ll find inaccuracies in Yew, its corresponding dungeon Wrong, and the area of Serpent Spine and Deep Forest in Ultima IX. Here, the “theme park” syndrome is stronger than everywhere else in Britannia. Who in the world had the idea to design Yew with tree houses and elevators? Elevators you can turn on by pushing a button? It’s a button on a tree, for Lord’s sake. One word: hilarious.
Ignorance of predecessors
-
In the library of Yew, a book says that the hero of Ultima I to III was the Avatar
- but that’s not true! There was no Avatar before Ultima IV, damn it!
(by Hacki Dragon) -
Where are the Silverleaf trees from Ultima VII? Speaking of this, the developers
also forgot about the Emps who used to live near Yew.
(by Dino the Dark Dragon)
Technical shortcomings
-
The path from Yew to Wrong is quite long and dangerous. Because of this, the town fathers of
Yew have set up a teleportation system to quickly get to Wrong. Wouldn’t
that be an amazing public transportation system? They could get the cash rolling if they were
smarter! It’s better than a moongate! And why doesn’t the Avatar ask if he may
use the teleporter after the shrine’s cleansed? How is it used anyway?
(by Hacki Dragon) -
The guards in Wrong throw the Avatar into the same cell every time! Bleh!
(But that’s always been strange in Ultima.)
(by Hacki Dragon) -
Attention, the Book of Justice wants to confuse the Avatar! The creature of Justice, to be
precise, can’t be found northeast of Yew but southeast.
(by Hacki Dragon)Mistake eliminated, thanks to the patch.
-
The monk at Empath Abbey has a dangerous life. Surrounded by stones, the sea,
walls of rock, and all kinds of monsters. What does he eat, how does he defend himself? Does
he live off air and love?
(by Angelo) -
How actually do the guards in Wrong manage to throw the Avatar into the cell? After all, the
Avatar is stronger and has better equipment.
(by Tailrace Dragon) -
Where does the judge in Yew do his official business? I can’t believe
there’s just a small desk there for him. Obviously, Justice in Yew does not only suffer
moral, but also administrative trouble lately.
(by Hacki Dragon) -
Raven is supposedly held in Cell 17, but... Where are the numbers?
(by Miguel Nollet)
General problems
-
Apparently the winged Gargoyles can fly. Why doesn’t Vasagralem carry the Avatar
up to the center of Wrong, since there is no roof, but instead lets him go through
an underwater hallway, infested with spiders and such?
(by Miguel Nollet) -
Everybody in Yew is unjust, with the sole exception of Raleigh - Why doesn’t
the Column affect him?
(by Hacki Dragon)This inaccuracy no longer appears in the patch. Raleigh’s dialogue was extremely improved, so that this character now doesn’t seem to be as dull anymore.
-
Raleigh plans going to Britain... This could get a bit difficult; after all,
Lord British has cut off the connection.
(by Hacki Dragon) -
From where do Vasagralem and Desbet know of Ambrosia’s destruction?
Everything happened deep beneath the sea, didn’t it? Why must the player make up everything
himself?
(by Hacki Dragon)In the patch, Vasagralem talks about debris in the sea and how he went and found out about Ambrosia’s destruction himself, after he had heard rumors.
-
Why did Vasagralem not grab Iolo or Gwenno instead of Raven? They were both
in close vicinity, and it would have struck the Avatar even harder - hopefully.
(Either Vasagralem feared them since they have a lot of combat experience against Gargoyles from Ultima VI, or he figured that Raven, an outlaw, would be easier to accuse than respected people like Iolo and Gwenno. However, in a spoiled city like Yew, this should not make much of a difference.)
(by Hacki Dragon)The overall scheme becomes clearer in the patch. Vasagralem reported Raven to the court, and guards from Yew arrested her.
-
Don’t you find a note in the first room of Wrong that says the guards are supposed
to kill the Avatar? Yet they just imprison him.
(by Hacki Dragon)In the patch, this was replaced with a note about the Wyrmguards in Wrong.
-
The thing with Cleo is most strange! Did she kill all horses or did she not?
Why would she do it anyway? Sorry, I’m probably too stupid to get it. (But I have a theory!)
(by Hacki Dragon)In the patch, this brainless dialogue was completely revised, so that not only the flaw was corrected, but we also get to hear something about the Emps.
-
So, Vasagralem flew to Yew. Did he not tell Lord British where he could be found?
The Avatar, of course, doesn’t ask the king either, ignoring the fact that he’s
searching for a Gargoyle because of the lens.
(by Hacki Dragon) -
From where does Vasagralem actually know that Raven is the Avatar’s girlfriend?
All conversations between those two never took place in public, did they? (Surely the Gargoyle
king isn’t a voyeur... Or is he?)
(by Hacki Dragon)The patch tells a totally different story: Vasagralem actually intends to accuse the Avatar at court, but Raven sacrifices herself for him.
-
Why must it be Avatar who first finds the glass sword in Serpent Spine after
so many years? And why don’t you get an explanation of the glass swords’ origin
instead of that strange pointless monster?
(by Hacki Dragon) -
Vasagralem told us that the red Codex lens had been stolen, but in Yew, he
just hands the Avatar the lens. What has happened in between?
(by Artic Blaze Dragon) -
When you find Montego (the slave trader from Buccaneer’s Den) in Wrong, she claims to
have broken no laws, because slavery is legal in Buccaneer’s Den. She adds:
“All of my activities are sanctioned by the law.”
(by Tribun Dragon) -
Why is Montego suddenly locked up in Wrong? Why did she leave Buccaneer’s
Den? Did she go to Yew? Why did the guards arrest her? Why did they know she was a criminal
when nobody in Britannia has a clue about what happens in their neighbor towns?
